How To Remove Bark From Cedar Posts : How to Peel Cedar Bark Off a Tree. Reverse the bit of the spud in the same cut and press down again, this time with the bit bevel up. Lever the handle downward as you press the spud forward and the bit slips under the bark. Work the bit from side to side and open the bark layer along the length of the cedar log.. Remove the branches with the axe. Cut two 2-inch slits about 1 inch apart, through the bark at one end of the log. Insert the knife blade between the bark and the wood underneath. Pry the bark up off the wood. Grasp the bark and pull upward and away from the log in a long strip. Continue to pull the strip off, down the entire length of the log.. Process. If you have a home wood shop, you may want to use a cedar tree for lumber, in which case removing the tree's outer covering of bark is necessary before planing the log. Alternatively, bark may need to be removed from a newly cut tree due to bark beetles, which infest the inner bark layer between outer bark and wood.. I often use the back of the axe and bash the bark to get it started . A hammer would do too. Then strip it lengthways . Fence posts where bark is left on and the wire is wrapped arround the bark tend to lift and bubble near the wire and eventually the bark pulls out after maybe three years. And if you're stapling the fence to the post (as you normally do with wooden posts) it shouldn't matter when the bark strips off and the wire is a little loose. When you're building the fence, you don't want to drive the staple hard against the wire to begin with.. Fence posts should be aged because the outer (white) wood will rot off, it's the inner (red) wood that is fairly rot resistant. If you must use fresh cut cedar for fence posts pick the posts with the least amount of white and the most red..
