How To Clean Up An Old Wooden Table : How to Clean Antique Furniture - Cleaning the Furniture Choose a mild cleaner. Rub the surface down with a soft cloth and your chosen cleaner. Remove stuck on stains with steel wool. Use a toothbrush in hard-to-reach places. Wipe down the furniture and allow it to dry. Polish the furniture when . Start with the gentlest cleaner and move up to stronger ones as needed. Try mixing a weak solution of water and dish washing soap. Dip a soft cloth in the solution, wring it out and wipe the entire piece. You want a damp cloth, not a wet one. Don’t saturate the wood, and rinse your cloth often. Take a second, clean cloth and dry the piece thoroughly.. Steps to Clean the Table: Fill a bowl with warm water. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and/or a small amount of dish soap. Agitate the water to mix it well. Moisten the soft cloth with the sudsy water or vinegar mixture. Use the cloth to wipe the table. Pay special attention to edges . Moisten the soft cloths lightly with the solution and gently wipe the dirt and grime off of the wood surface. In humid areas, or if you have several layers of wax buildup, you may need to repeat the process a couple of times to remove all of the layers.. Rotate the cloth frequently to avoid spreading the dirt it absorbs. Quickly dry the area with a soft clean cloth. Stay away from spots where the finish is chipped off or cracked to avoid wetting the wood and causing it to swell. If the mild soapy solution doesn't work, you can use a stronger cleaning solution.. Dust Away. The first step to cleaning antique wood furniture is to gently remove any dust that has built up on its surfaces. To avoid scratching the wood, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment for hard-to-reach surfaces or crevices, such as the table and chair legs, or simply use a hand-held soft brush or very soft cloth for the larger surfaces..
